The appearance of one of the most ancient icons of the Mother of God "Healer" occurred during the time of St. Equal-to-the-Apostles Nina, the Enlightener of Georgia (4th century). The icon was in the Tsilkan temple in the area of Kartaliniya.

The icon depicts the Mother of God standing at the bedside of a sick cleric. The iconographic plot for the miraculous image was the legend of miraculous healing, described in the work of St. Demetrius of Rostov "Irrigated Fleece":

“I happened to read such a thing in the book of Peter Damian. A certain cleric of the Nivirna Church was seriously ill with a mortal disease. And it was his custom every hour, when the clock was striking, to give praise to the Most Holy Theotokos with an angelic greeting: “Rejoice, Blessed One!” - attaching to it some kind of prayer to Her and doing it day and night. If he fell asleep when, then with the strike of the clock he woke up and performed the usual prayer. And as much as our Lady I revered as such a ruler, how many hours in the days and in the night have passed.

And when he was lying on the bed of illness and preparing for death, our Most Holy Lady Theotokos suddenly appears to him and, slightly opening Her virginal nipple and squeezing it, sprinkles the mouth of the sick with milk and becomes invisible. From this incident, the sick man jumped up, quickly put on his clerical robes and ran to the church. Entering the choir, he stood in his place among the singing clergy, amazed and trembling at the sudden change in him and an unexpected recovery - after all, no one expected to see him alive. When they asked about the reason for his health, then he opened before everyone, glorifying his Merciful Healer, how She sprinkled his lips - traces of that milk still remained on his lips ... Oh, glorious miracle!

After all, the All-Merciful Healer could have healed Her servant in some other way, by word or touch, but this strange method of healing was revealed: those lips of the Virgin were sprinkled with milk, that every hour they praised the Most Pure Virgin, here still, on earth, paying them bribes. So that everyone, seeing and hearing, give thanks with one mouth and one heart to the glorified Virgin Mary.

Despite the fact that believers have long turned to the Blessed Virgin for help in healing from various ailments, in Russia only at the end of the 18th century a list of a miraculous image called “Our Lady the Healer”, located in the Moscow Alekseevsky Convent, became famous.

The book by I. Tokmakov “Historical and Archaeological Description of the Moscow Alekseevsky Monastery”, published in 1889, contains a description of the miraculous icon “Healer”: “It is small in size: seven inches high and six inches wide; placed in a silver-gilded fold-out with enamel decorations. On the wings of the fold there are images: on the left - the Archangel Michael, on the right - the Archangel Gabriel, as if supporting the icon. The riza is adorned with many diamonds and other precious stones; the clothes on the Mother of God are completely covered with pearls. The value of jewelry reaches four thousand rubles.

The icon is located in the Exaltation of the Cross Church, in the cathedral monastery church, as this church is sometimes called, on the south side. The very fold with the icon is inserted in a stone pillar supporting the vault of the cathedral; in front of the icon is a special platform with small stone steps on both sides; in front of the icon is a candlestick with nine lamps.

The guidebook “Golden-domed Moscow” (UKINO “Spiritual Transfiguration”, M., 2007) indicates that in the 1930s the monastery was abolished, and the miraculous image was transferred to Church of the Resurrection of Christ in Sokolniki .

On some lists of the miraculous image, in the lower part there is a story about a miracle, similar to the text set forth in the work of St. Demetrius of Rostov. On the margins of the image, there are sometimes images of the holy martyrs unmercenaries Cosmas and Damian, the holy martyr Antipas, Bishop of Pergamon, the martyrs Cyric and Julitta.

As a rule, churches at hospitals were consecrated in the name of the “Healer” icon of the Mother of God, where the sick could pray to the Most Holy Theotokos for the healing of soul and body. In particular, in Moscow, in the name of the holy image of the "Healer", one of the churches of the Old Catherine's Hospital on Meshchanskaya Street and the house church at the Police Hospital named after Emperor Alexander III, arranged by the famous doctor Haaz, were consecrated. After the revolution they were closed and the buildings were rebuilt.

In 1992, in honor of the icon "Healer" was consecrated a new hospital church at the Research Institute of Clinical Psychiatry on Kashirskoye Highway. People in mournful life circumstances come to pray in this temple in front of the blessed icon of the Mother of God.
